The Breastfeeding Promotion Consortium (BPC)

The Breastfeeding Promotion Consortium (BPC) is a forum for dialogue between breastfeeding advocacy groups and Federal agencies to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding. The BPC is facilitated by the United States Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) with support from the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). It was formed in 1990 with encouragement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The consortium meets twice yearly in Washington, DC, on the day before the meeting of the US Breastfeeding Committee.

Membership in the BPC offers ILCA an opportunity to represent lactation consultants at the national level to the Federal agencies that help determine the course of health care in the United States. Attendance at meetings allows the member organizations to update each other on their efforts to advance breastfeeding at many levels. This forum provides a conduit for non-governmental organizations, such as ILCA, to provide their input and recommendations to the US Federal government for how breastfeeding care, services, research, and policy can be improved.
