Abstract:
The National WIC Breastfeeding Promotion Project, Loving
Support Makes Breastfeeding Work, is a highly successful
national breastfeeding promotion program throughout the
country, with large increases in breastfeeding rates in the
States that have implemented the program in a comprehensive
manner. This project is being implemented through the United
States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service
(USDA/FNS).
In 2002 USDA implemented a new phase to the project to build
on the success of Loving Support. "Using Loving Support to
Build a Breastfeeding-Friendly Community," is a training,
technical assistance, and implementation project providing
grant funding to 9 U.S. states to implement a comprehensive,
community-based breastfeeding promotion program. States
selected were Alaska, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania,
Vermont, Maine, Kentucky, and Michigan.
This poster session will showcase the national project, which
is a cooperative agreement between USDA, Best Start Social
Marketing, and the Mississippi State Department of Health. The
poster includes details of the highly successful interactive
training program provided by Best Start (which developed the
original Loving Support program) and Mississippi (which
conducted a comprehensive statewide campaign that resulted in
dramatic breastfeeding rate increases).
Participants will also learn about the creative State projects
that are being implemented in the 9 States, and the community
partners who are working together to make it happen. Partners
are a diverse group including private and hospital based
lactation consultants, ILCA affiliates, local breastfeeding
coalitions, La Leche League Leaders, physicians, nurses, WIC
staff, worksite employers, childcare providers, and
representatives from Early Head Start, Cooperative Extension,
and other community programs. |
