Non-governmental Organization (NGO) Committee for UNICEF

Held June 05, 2004, New York, New York, USA
ILCA Liaison: Susan E. Burger, MHS, PhD, IBCLC

Susan Burger attended the Nongovernmental Organization (NGO) Committee for UNICEF meeting, on June 5, 2004. She found that funding and support for HIV/AIDS has eroded the funding and support for breastfeeding interventions, despite the fact that breastfeeding interventions could prevent a substantially greater proportion of deaths. A recent report by Judy Canahuati suggests that infant feeding is no longer perceived as a priority among UNICEF field staff.

There is much to be done to ensure that breastfeeding on the forefront of international development. Some NGOs focus on advocacy for breastfeeding and others provide services, technical assistance or policy documents that strengthen interventions to promote breastfeeding. Nevertheless, these promotional efforts leave out an important group of women: those who experience clinical problems. While women in developing countries may experience fewer clinical problems because they live in a cultural environment that is more supportive of breastfeeding, they still do experience these problems. ILCA has the opportunity to play a unique role in addressing this obvious gap if we can develop strategy to undertake key activities that will complement the activities of other organizations.
