Taiwan Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy (TABA)

Held June 14-16, 2004, South Taiwan
ILCA Liaison: Doris Fok, IBCLC

Doris Fok, IBCLC, ILCA's Asian Ambassador, attended the Taiwan Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy on June 14-16, 2004, at the invitation of the National Taipei College of Nursing. She presented her 18-Hour Breastfeeding Counseling Course. Ms. Fok has been conducting this breastfeeding course for lay counselors since 1990.

The course, whichis designed for a group of 15, was attended by 38, including representatives from the government, hospitals, and the Taiwan mothers' support group. Various regions of Taiwan were represented. In the past, Dr. Gay Palmer of England and Debi Bocar of the USA taught the group. TABA enjoyed having an Asian IBCLC sharing breastfeeding counseling from the Asian perspective. The course worksheets will be translated into Chinese so that the materials may be used and shared with others.

Doris also shared information about IBLCE and ILCA. The IBLCE brochure has been translated into Chinese by one of the doctors who attended the course. There was much interest in the exams. A number of participants hope to form a study group for the IBLCE in one or two years' time. It is hoped that there will be a dynamic and vibrant group sitting the IBLCE in 2005.
