WABA Global Partners Meeting III

Held in October 2004, San Juan, Costa Rica
ILCA Liaison: Sallie Page Goertz

Sallie Page Goertz attended this meeting on ILCA's behalf in October of 2004. The gathering was hosted by CEFEMINA - a Costa Rican NGO that works for women's rights, to include breastfeeding, maternity protection, work equity, safety, and more. Representatives from IBFAN, ILCA, LLLI, Wellstart, Linkages, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, and other NGOs working with infant feeding issues in the developing world met to discuss a variety of issues related to the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding (GSIYCF) and Maternity Protection/Gender Issues.

Sallie participated in the HIV and Breastfeeding track, as a follow-up in part to the WABA Global Partners Meeting II in Arusha, Tanzania, and the partner's working group meeting in Lusaka in February 2004.

The issue of clinical support for breastfeeding has come to the forefront in these discussions, as well as in a variety of documents related to IYCF, and HIV/Infant Feeding. The GSIYCF specifically mentions certified lactation consultants as an important resource. Therefore, promotion of the strategy is in ILCA's best interest.

Sallie encouraged attendees to reframe the conversation about infant feeding in the context of HIV/Aids into a discussion about infant survival. The focus of most funding and research at this time is directed to Prevention of Maternal to Child Transmission (PMTCT), forgetting about the bigger picture of child survival. Studies are not reporting on infant morbidity/mortality other than HIV transmission, so the world is NOT getting a complete picture of the issues. To this end, Sallie has been invited to give commentary on materials being developed for a BF/HIV project in Tanzania. This will be a great opportunity to work with a person and organization, the University Research Company, to try to reframe the conversation about HIV and infant feeding. This will be good for breastfeeding advocacy.

In the welcome address, Sallie had the opportunity to inform the audience regarding the mission/vision of ILCA, its activities related to promotion of the Code, BFHI, and the GSIYCF. An invitation to join was also extended to the audience. ILCA membership brochures, and ILCA statements regarding HIV/Infant feeding, Infant Feeding, and Feeding in Emergencies were distributed.
