History2009 February: President Jean Kouba met with Senator William Keon in Ottawa to discuss improving initiation and duration rates of breastfeeding in Canada. Jean presented a Report on Breastfeeding for Optimal Childhood Health for presentation to the Senate.
2008 April: President of CLCA, Isabelle Cote, attended the ILCA Strategic Planning Meeting. Much of the discussion was centred around the (LC) profession; recognition, educational pathways, improving affiliation groups and general strategies on managing our professional standing in the healthcare community. October: Annual Board meeting held in Toronto. October: President Jean Kouba attended the Child expert roundtable conference in Ottawa and took part in plans to create a report for the improvement of infant and child health that will be presented to the government. November: Establishment of Ontario Lactation Consultants association (OLCA) and Saskatchewan Lactation Consultants Association Inc.(SLCA) November: Dianne Nikiforuk and Isabelle Cote were presented with the Annual Award of Excellence at the Annual General meeting in Calgary in recognition of their continuous support and commitment to CLCA/ACCL and its objectives.
2007 Spring: Past Publicity Director, Dianne Nikiforuk, attended the Chronic Disease Prevention Association of Canada (CDPAC). Prevention strategies were discussed in regards to the high incidences of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity etc. and how we could incorporate the recognition of breastfeeding as a preventative strategy. Attendance at breastfeeding conferences by those in these health related fields is a key component for breastfeeding supporters to be more visible and regarded as part of the prevention plan. See www.cdpac.ca Spring: Participation at the ILCA Marketing Strategy Meeting in San Diego. August: signed an affiliation agreement with ILCA. CLCA/ACCL is the second National Affiliate, the Unites States being the first in 2006. All Canadian memberships will now include membership to ILCA with its many benefits including quarterly copies of the highly respected Journal of Human Lactation. November: AGM in Calgary, the first Annual CLCA/ACCL Breastfeeding Achievement Award was given to Jennifer Peddlesden and Jennifer Reed.
2006 CLCA -ACCL celebrated it's 20th Anniversary! The BOD met in Montreal for a three day working meeting. We held our AGM in conjunction with the Ligue La Leche Conference and hosted a Wine and Cheese event. CLCA-ACCL's first President, Joan Fisher was present and shared memories of the beginnings of the organization.
2001 Independent Study Modules for CERP's developed and available for members and non-members
1999 CLCA/ACCL joined the new Internet age and launched a web site and redesigned in 2003.The first CLCA/ACCL publication, Informatics, was produced to provide information on distant educational opportunities and helpful web sites.
1998 The membership grows to 430 members across Canada, from Newfoundland to the Yukon. CLCA/ACCL became a sitting member of the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada.
1994 The organization underwent an organizational review and the first face-to-face Board of Directors meeting was held.
1991 Consumer and Corporate Affairs incorporated the organization under the name of Canadian Lactation Consultant Association/Association canadienne des consultantes en lactation (CLCA/ACCL). The membership fee was $10.00.
1989 The organization began to develop its by-laws in order to become an ILCA affiliate.
1986 A first meeting of 28 interested people took place in Ottawa during the La Leche League Canada conference. At that time, it was the Canadian Chapter of the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA). The first Newsletter was printed and continues to be published four times a year. The newsletter provides members with a source of happenings across the country, information, and resources and with a place to discuss issues important to Canadian lactation consultants. The organization started to develop and maintain a lending audio visual library for members.
